Architecture's Groundwork Against Climate Change

From urban towers with green façades to self-sustaining desert structures, architects are recalibrating design priorities to confront environmental precarity.

On a sun-soaked plot in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, the Baharash Architecture-designed Oasis Eco Resort stands as an audacious challenge to aridity. The project, announced in 2016 and scheduled for completion in 2024, encapsulates the potential of architecture not merely to occupy a landscape but to remediate it. The central water feature of the resort is not ornamental; it forms a key part of the site’s greywater recycling system, which irrigates surrounding vegetation in this desert. Baharash Bagherian, the firm’s founder, described the project as "a benchmark for sustainable hospitality," speaking at a conference in Sharjah in 2023.

In contrast, urban density has pushed architects in cities like Singapore to embrace vertical greenery. The PARKROYAL on Pickering, completed by WOHA in 2013, integrates over 15,000 square meters of sky gardens into its structure. These cascading green terraces perform more than aesthetic functions; they cool the building, offset carbon emissions, and cultivate biodiversity in the city core. Richard Hassell, co-founding director of the studio, emphasised that "architecture must anticipate climate challenges, not merely respond to them," in an interview with Dezeen in 2019. The hotel’s façade operates as a living cushion against heat gain, a notable deviation from the glass-and-steel orthodoxy of commercial high-rises.

Materials innovation is another frontier in environmentally attuned design. The 2022 Serpentine Pavilion by Theaster Gates, Black Chapel, highlighted the use of salvaged and recyclable materials. Yet, perhaps the most comprehensive recent material experiment emerges from Japan. Sou Fujimoto Architects’ Kitakami Wooden Bridge Museum, set to open in 2023, employs a timber framework designed to sequester carbon throughout its lifespan. Wood, long undervalued by modernist orthodoxy, has found renewed status in the era of green architecture. Even buildings of monumental scale, such as the Sara Kulturhus in Sweden, completed in 2021, now embrace cross-laminated timber for its minimal carbon footprint relative to concrete.

Beyond individual projects, entire urban frameworks are being reconsidered. The "15-minute city"—a concept popularised by urbanist Carlos Moreno in 2016—has gained tangible traction in Paris. Under the leadership of Mayor Anne Hidalgo, the city has reimagined streets, diminishing car dependency and prioritising pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. The concept is not without critics. As architectural historian Barnabas Calder noted in a 2021 lecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, "The challenge lies in retrofitting cities built for cars without replicating socioeconomic inequalities." Nonetheless, the urban model has inspired cities from Melbourne to Bogotá.

But are these projects enough? Climate resilience in architecture demands more than isolated exemplars. The industry’s reliance on concrete alone accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions, as the International Energy Agency reported in 2022. The rise of "low-carbon concrete," utilising supplementary materials like fly ash, signals incremental change but not systemic overhaul.

The jury, as always, remains out. These projects showcase a genuine redirection of architectural thought, yet their scalability and reproducibility often falter against economic and political inertia. The question becomes: Can architecture outpace the climate crisis, or are such projects destined to remain anomalies, symbolic rather than transformative?

For now, the stakes remain visible in every green tower and timber museum. These buildings mark a shift in architectural authorship—from human-centric to planet-conscious. Whether they endure as innovations or cautionary tales depends not on their ingenuity but on their adoption.
