Crafting the Future: Innovations in Material Use and Design

Designers are pushing material boundaries while embracing sustainable crafts, offering a blueprint for future creative practices.

A vase by Studio ThusThat, crafted from bauxite waste, stands on a gallery pedestal in London. Its matte surface, reminiscent of volcanic rock, is a byproduct of aluminum refinement—red mud transformed into a functional object. This repurposed waste signifies a new perspective on resources.

Founded in the Netherlands in 2018, ThusThat focuses on industrial byproducts. Bauxite residue, slag, and fly ash were once discarded materials. Studio co-founder Kevin Rouff described their approach in a 2021 talk at the Design Museum as "alchemy but with industrial leftovers," aiming to reveal the hidden costs of extraction industries.

Material innovation also embraces new techniques. In Japan’s Shiga prefecture, potter Hiroshi Nakamura, from a lineage of Shigaraki artisans, created a clay body mixed with rice husks. The locally sourced husks burn off during firing, resulting in lighter yet structurally sound vessels. Nakamura began experimenting with this mixture in 2016, refining it through multiple kiln cycles. The texture evokes unpolished stone, grounding contemporary forms in the region’s historical wabi-sabi aesthetic.

Craft and sustainability are gaining global momentum. In Finland, mycelium—a fungus-based material—is reshaping furniture and lighting. The design firm Secto Design collaborated with researchers at VTT Technical Research Centre to prototype lampshades grown, not manufactured. Mycelium’s compostability reduces landfill waste while providing a tactile, organic finish.

Despite enthusiasm for material innovation, challenges persist. Durability and scalability often conflict with craft ideals. Dirk Vander Kooij, a Dutch designer known for 3D-printed furniture, highlights this tension. His 2023 series Endless Thread utilized recycled polycarbonate, requiring precise additive manufacturing techniques. "Scaling up is where craft meets its limits," Vander Kooij noted during an interview at Dutch Design Week.

Institutions are taking notice. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London featured biomaterials in its 2022 exhibition Material Futures, showcasing objects made from algae, seaweed, and synthetic spider silk. Curator Martina Droth emphasized that these innovations influence supply chain ethics and resource depletion.

Economic factors are crucial. Sustainable processes often entail higher initial costs, posing a barrier for small-scale makers. The Crafts Council in the UK has advocated for increased subsidies to offset material experimentation expenses. High-end design galleries like Friedman Benda in New York market sustainability as a selling point, featuring objects like Fernando Laposse’s Totomoxtle marquetry (crafted from heirloom corn husks) as both collectible and ecologically conscious.

Education is essential. Institutions like the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and the Design Academy Eindhoven are embedding sustainability into their core curricula. RISD’s Nature, Culture, Sustainability Studies department, launched in 2017, offers cross-disciplinary training, while Eindhoven’s Material Narratives program encourages students to trace their materials' origins. Critics argue that such initiatives often remain Western-centric, sidelining indigenous approaches to sustainable craft.

As these practices evolve, questions arise about their long-term impacts. Will material innovation change the essence of craft? Or will it reinforce its relevance amid ecological crises? Hiroshi Nakamura’s rice husk pottery suggests that tradition and innovation can coexist. Studio ThusThat’s industrial waste ceramics challenge the hierarchy between raw material and residue. Both approaches offer pathways for future makers, yet the broader cultural impact remains uncertain.

The bauxite vase encapsulates the promise and complexity of the current design moment. It serves as an experiment and provocation, suggesting that craft’s future may hinge on a willingness to embrace imperfection—both in material and process.
