From Containers to Conduits: The Evolution of Contemporary Exhibition Spaces

In March 2022, Buenos Aires’ Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) unveiled redesigned galleries for its 20th anniversary. Architect Pablo Tomás de Estrada reorganized over 2,000 square meters to prioritize modularity and visitor interaction. This shift reflects a trend of museums evolving into platforms for dialogue rather than mere archives.

The galleries encourage visitor flow and adaptability for curators. “The intention was to break away from static, compartmentalized spaces,” said Gabriela Rangel, former Artistic Director, in a 2022 interview. The renovation features flexible wall systems and adjustable lighting grids, allowing exhibitions to shift in scale and narrative focus with minimal structural changes. A notable example is the 2023 exhibition Tercer Ojo, which juxtaposed works by Argentine modernists with contemporary installations, fostering cross-generational dialogues.

MALBA is not alone in this evolution. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago installed “commons spaces” for communal engagement in 2021. Meanwhile, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum designated part of its Exhibition Road Quarter as a ‘living space’ for educational workshops, live performances, and food markets. A report in Curator: The Museum Journal from July 2023 highlights a 35% increase in visitor-focused exhibition layouts over the last decade.

This evolution meets a growing demand for interactive, accessible, and inclusive institutions, reshaping how communities engage with art.
