Sustaining Form: New Approaches in Design for a Changing World

From reclaimed wood panels to solar-integrated textiles, designers are reshaping materials and function to confront the climate crisis.

In Rotterdam, the Floating Office is a 3,606-square-metre timber structure designed by Powerhouse Company. Built on a buoyant concrete base, it is carbon-neutral and energy self-sufficient, relying on rooftop solar panels and geothermal heating. The architects describe it as both office and statement, combining renewable materials with adaptive reuse of water infrastructure. Its timber frame uses cross-laminated timber (CLT), favored for its low embodied carbon compared to steel or concrete.

Designer Natsai Audrey Chieza’s studio, Faber Futures, seeks material solutions through biology. Chieza has worked with genetically engineered bacteria to dye fabrics sustainably, consuming 500 times less water than traditional methods. The studio's Biofabricate initiative collaborates with manufacturers to integrate microbial dyeing at commercial scale. “To design with biology is to think of the material's lifecycle from inception to decay,” Chieza stated at the 2022 Dezeen Day conference.

Energy efficiency drives architectural trends. The SolarLeaf façade, first demonstrated in Hamburg in 2013, remains a prototype among bioarchitects. Created by Splitterwerk Architects in partnership with Colt International, this system traps microalgae in glass panels. In sunlight, algae produce biomass, generating biofuel while providing shade for interiors. Although not commercially scaled, its integration into building envelopes offers a vision for multi-functional design.

In product design, experiments in circularity are expanding. At the 2023 Milan Design Week, Studio Plastique presented drinking glasses made from discarded silicon wafers collected from European solar panel factories. Each glass carries a frosted finish from its previous life, making its history visible. Studio co-founders Thijs Messely and Annalisa Seesink have avoided virgin materials entirely since 2018. “Waste is not waste—it’s material in flux,” Messely told Frame magazine.

Historical waste finds a place in contemporary design. The Lviv workshop of Ukrainian carpenters, Yosyp and Dmytro Havrysh, recovers timber fragments from bombed-out buildings. One project features a dining table made from splinters of 19th-century floorboards, charred by missile strikes. The Havrysh brothers aim not to erase their material’s scars but to preserve them as a record of resilience.

A notable question among critics is whether scalable solutions can match bespoke experiments. Jennifer Jenkins, an environmental design scholar at the University of Edinburgh, warns against greenwashing: “A sustainable aesthetic does not guarantee sustainable processes. We need transparency in supply chains before the label 'green' carries weight.”

These practices engage material origin, use, and end-of-life in design thinking. As governments and corporations navigate policy shifts to meet climate goals, such design experiments offer pathways, if not immediate solutions. Their broader adoption depends on aligning consumer expectations with resource limitations.

The challenge remains: can the future of design craft beauty from enough?
