The Snowman22 Collection: Playful Lighting Meets Modern Aesthetics
ILKW’s Snowman22 lighting collection merges sculptural whimsy with functionality, redefining the role of lighting in contemporary living spaces.
In a studio off Kloof Nek Road in Cape Town, ILKW's Snowman22 collection takes shape. Each light fixture features hand-formed frosted glass globes stacked to evoke the charm of a snowman while adhering to modern design standards.
"When we started designing Snowman22 in early 2022," says ILKW co-founder Lindiwe Manzini, "we wanted to explore how lighting could be more engaging. It should spark a conversation." Founded in 2017 by Manzini and partner Karl Weiss, ILKW balances aesthetic experimentation with technical rigor.
Each lamp mounts on a steel frame finished in onyx black, soft white, or vermilion orange. The globes, ranging from 10 cm to 25 cm in diameter, diffuse a warm LED glow. The collection includes table lamps, pendant fixtures, and a striking floor lamp over 1.8 meters tall. Prices range from R12,800 to R19,500 (about $675-$1,030 USD), positioning the series as high-end yet accessible.
These playful designs reflect a trend where sculptural pieces replace purely functional fixtures. The Snowman22 collection aligns with the aesthetic of the Oda floor lamp by Sebastian Herkner and the whimsical designs of Moooi. "Lighting designers are increasingly exploring dual purposes—art and functionality," notes design critic Thando Nkosi. "A lamp must harmonize with the room's decor language, not just illuminate it."
Debuting at the Cape Town International Design Fair in November 2023, the collection attracted significant attention. ILKW's booth showcased the Snowman22 floor lamp alongside smaller table lamps, all lit to highlight their diffused quality. "We had a steady stream of people asking whether these were truly functional or just objets d'art," recalls Manzini. "That reaction confirmed we were tapping into something real—people want surprise in their homes."
ILKW's whimsical approach marks a departure from older, austere modernism. Minimalism once dominated design, viewed as the pinnacle of taste. Today, a more relaxed interpretation embraces playfulness as a sophisticated element.
Yet, some critics worry this whimsy may lack longevity. "Decor that feels too trendy can age faster," warns Nkosi. "ILKW must ensure Snowman22 feels timeless, not just of-the-moment." Manzini remains unfazed: "We think deeply about materials and production methods. Good materials don’t date, even as tastes change."
Production occurs primarily in South Africa, partnering with local glassblowers from Khayelitsha Craft Collective. Weiss emphasizes this choice reflects both ethos and logistics. "We want to prove that high-quality, globally competitive design can originate here without relying entirely on imports," he says. This decision aligns with broader conversations about ethical sourcing and sustainability in design.
The glass used in Snowman22 is recycled, sourced from a Johannesburg supplier specializing in post-consumer materials. Weiss insists the recycled content does not compromise clarity or durability. ILKW recently released a video detailing the material process, praised by environmental advocates.
Regarding international reach, Manzini acknowledges exports are growing in ILKW’s strategy. "The demand for African design is growing globally," she notes, "but with it comes a responsibility to steer the narrative. We’re exporting values—collaboration, material consciousness, and joy."
Currently, Snowman22 is available through select South African retailers and the ILKW online store. Discussions are underway with international design galleries for pop-up exhibitions in Europe and North America. Weiss hints at a potential collaboration with a major retailer in Paris but declines to confirm specifics.
Will Snowman22’s charm endure, or is it destined to be a fleeting trend? The question remains open. What is clear is that ILKW has captured something resonant. By balancing whimsy with discipline, the studio illuminates homes and expands the possibilities of contemporary lighting design.
