Where Diversity Meets Design: Broadening the Field's Horizons
From the volcanic terrains of Mexico to the terraces of Zhongxin Village, diverse cultural narratives are reshaping the global design landscape.
In Puertecito, Mexico, the Salina floor lamp by Federico Stefanovich illuminated a newly completed house. This lamp was part of the Remanencias project, curated by Alejandro Ramírez Orozco. Fourteen designers created bespoke objects—furniture, lighting, and sculpture—placed in homes designed by various architects across Mexico’s climates. The installations were photographed and then removed, leaving only faint traces of interaction.
“Remanencias names that which persists after the encounter,” Orozco stated. The project merges contemporary craft with architecture, emphasizing the cultural identity embedded in each object and its context. This layered approach shows how cultural diversity enriches design, which often favors uniform aesthetics.
Estudio Ome, a Mexico City-based studio, underscores the significance of place and heritage in design. Founders Susana Rojas Saviñón and Hortense Blanchard observe volcanic fields, industrial sites, and urban fragments. Unlike conventional practices that impose external metrics, Estudio Ome allows the land to guide their decisions. Their projects address soil erosion, drainage patterns, and vegetation growth, creating landscapes that resonate with ecological and cultural narratives.
This approach earned them the ArchDaily 2025 Next Practices Award, reflecting a broader movement in global design: the valorization of local contexts and stories. These narratives challenge the notion of design as a universal language, positioning it as a medium for diverse voices to converse.
In China’s Zhongxin Village, Osmanthus Yard, conceived by Shen Wen of Atelier Wen’Arch, integrates remnants of ancient retaining walls, a century-old Osmanthus tree, and an adjacent well. This project demonstrates how contemporary design can honor historical layers, embedding new structures into inherited landscapes. Cultural memory becomes architectural fabric.
What connects these projects is an ethos of inclusion. By amplifying regional narratives, they counter the flattening tendencies of globalism. Diversity in design is a core strength that expands the discipline’s scope, making it more reflective of the world.
However, challenges persist. The industry’s gatekeeping mechanisms often marginalize designers from underrepresented backgrounds. Cultural narratives risk commodification, reduced to mere aesthetics rather than authentically engaged with. The pressing question is how to ensure that celebrating diversity leads to structural equity.
Projects like these signal a shift toward a design practice that listens as much as it speaks, valuing what persists alongside what is created. As Ramírez Orozco articulates, the goal is to honor “what remains when the moment itself has already ceased to exist.”
