How Technology is Reshaping Modern Design and Sustainability

In Lagos, Olamide Ojo, founder of Studio Emerge, showcases a prototype created with AI-driven modelling software. On his sleek laptop, he inputs constraints like materials and dimensions. 'It generates hundreds of usable options,' he explains. This technology enhances creativity rather than replaces it. Ojo primarily focuses on small-batch furniture production, shipping much of his work overseas. Established in 2019, Studio Emerge represents designers using technology to tackle challenges of scale and sustainability.
This trend extends beyond Lagos. In Nairobi, architect Wanjiku Kariuki employs similar tools to enhance housing design. Her studio, Mwanga Forms, collaborates with developers to create AI-driven floor plans that optimize airflow and natural light. 'With Nairobi's urban sprawl, we need homes that are affordable and designed for longevity,' Kariuki notes. Since 2022, Mwanga Forms has piloted four housing developments, embedding these principles in every project.
The intersection of technology and design signals a broader movement driven by environmental and practical concerns. For instance, 3D printing has become a cornerstone of sustainable production. Companies like Tinko Labs in Accra manufacture modular furniture from recycled plastics. Founder Kwesi Frempong describes their process as 'hyper-local and zero-waste.' The Tinko Chair, made from discarded water bottles, can be produced in under four hours and retails for GHS 1,200 ($100 USD). 'It’s fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan,' Frempong adds.
Digital workflows simplify complex architectural projects. The Zeitz MOCAA Art Hotel in Cape Town, completed in 2024, demonstrated how digital twin modelling can reduce construction waste by up to 30%. Led by InSpace Design, the project utilized virtual reality to simulate material use and energy consumption. Creative director Amanda Joubert states, 'Clients can walk through a virtual version of their building and see the impact on cost and environmental footprint instantly.'
Despite advancements, access to technology remains a concern. High costs for AI software and 3D printers pose barriers for smaller studios. Ahmed Jibril, a Somali industrial designer in Hargeisa, critiques this disparity: 'Technological adoption often feels uneven. Many makers are locked out of these tools due to exorbitant costs.' Jibril partners with tech hubs like the Hargeisa Innovation Centre to access shared equipment for his biodegradable kitchenware line, keeping production local.
The integration of technology into design extends beyond outputs; it reconsiders processes. Co-creation platforms are thriving, enabling designers and consumers to collaborate directly. In Kumasi, University of Ghana graduates launched GoDesign, a platform that crowdsources design ideas. 'This isn’t just about pre-sales,' co-founder Akua Agyeman explains. 'It’s about creating what people genuinely need, reducing overproduction and obsolescence.' Since its launch in 2023, GoDesign has facilitated over 2,000 product designs.
However, tensions persist. The focus on sustainability can clash with market realities. Ojo observes, 'A sustainably produced chair might cost N150,000 ($190 USD), which is out of reach for the average Nigerian consumer. But does that mean we stop trying? No—it means we innovate harder.'
Cultural specificity also poses challenges. Kariuki critiques the reliance on AI-generated designs that replicate global trends instead of honoring local architecture. 'Technology must serve the place it operates in,' she asserts. 'Swahili culture has its own forms of environmental harmony. Tools need to adapt to that, not overwrite it.'
Looking ahead, the integration of technology and design is both inevitable and complex. The benefits of efficiency, sustainability, and co-creation are clear. Yet, as Jibril emphasizes, 'These tools should democratise design, not consolidate it under a few tech-heavy studios.' The challenge lies in ensuring accessibility, adaptability, and responsiveness to diverse regional needs. Designers like Frempong, Kariuki, and Ojo are proving that the fusion of creativity and technology can reshape not only objects but the systems that produce them.
