Stretching Boundaries: Textiles in Contemporary Architecture

Architectural fabrics are redefining the building envelope, merging aesthetics with environmental responsiveness to expand the material palette of modern design.

The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, completed in 2016, marked a significant moment in architecture. It joined the Serpentine Pavilion by Bjarke Ingels Group, which showcased lightweight, translucent textiles that challenged traditional material norms. While glass and steel dominated the 20th century, fabrics are now emerging as vital components in 21st-century architecture.

Architectural fabrics, such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), are essential for façades and shading systems. The Shanghai Natural History Museum, completed in 2015 by Perkins and Will, employs PTFE-coated fiberglass to adapt to the sun’s trajectory.

These fabrics are lightweight and durable, spanning large areas with minimal support. They enhance thermal performance and improve building efficiency. As climate responsiveness becomes critical, architects increasingly use these materials to connect indoor and outdoor spaces. David Tickle, principal at Woods Bagot, states, ‘fabric membranes provide an elasticity that allows both form-making freedom and environmental responsiveness.’

Textiles engage aesthetics in ways conventional materials cannot. The Eden Project in Cornwall, designed by Grimshaw Architects in 2001, exemplifies ETFE’s sculptural potential. Its geodesic domes, clad in inflated ETFE pillows, reflect the landscape while providing insulation and light diffusion. More recent projects, like the Allianz Arena in Munich by Herzog & de Meuron, utilize fabric’s translucency, with ETFE panels glowing in Bayern Munich colors during matches.

Material innovation occurs within an economic and cultural context. The cost of ETFE has decreased significantly since its first architectural use in the 1982 Fuji Pavilion by Makoto Sei Watanabe, facilitating its adoption in various projects. The Forsyth Barr Stadium in New Zealand, completed in 2011, features a fully enclosed ETFE roof, combining transparency with weather protection.

Not all fabric applications rely on specialized materials. Shigeru Ban's Japan Pavilion at Expo 2000 used paper tubes and fabrics to create lightweight, biodegradable structures. This demonstrates that textile architecture can align with sustainability goals, addressing lifecycle considerations and material reuse.

Critics question the longevity and maintenance of such structures. While PTFE and ETFE can last over 25 years, their resistance to fire and UV degradation varies. Their recyclability remains debated. Beatriz Colomina, a professor at Princeton University, argues that fabrics embody an aesthetic of ephemerality, challenging traditional durability notions. ‘They provoke a reconsideration of permanence in architectural culture,’ she remarked at a 2019 symposium on experimental materials.

Looking ahead, the interplay between textiles and digital fabrication is set to expand architectural possibilities. The ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion in Stuttgart, developed by the University of Stuttgart in 2020, uses computational design to inform the fabrication of fiber-reinforced membranes. These experimental pavilions suggest a future where textiles contribute to customizable and adaptable building envelopes.

The implications extend beyond aesthetics and construction. Textiles invite architects to rethink spatial boundaries. This is evident in Kéré Architecture's Serpentine Pavilion in 2017, which utilized a locally-sourced timber frame with a woven canopy that filtered light and rain. The pavilion's textile-like quality hints at the broader impact of textiles on architectural thinking.

However, the cultural reception of fabric structures remains mixed. In the global north, they often evoke impermanence or event architecture—temporary pavilions and circuses—rather than civic permanence. This perception may shift as architects, driven by sustainability imperatives, explore the material’s long-term applicability.

Textiles in architecture are not merely technical solutions; they provoke theoretical discussions. They challenge the boundary between structure and skin, permanence and impermanence. As more projects integrate fabrics, one question persists: can textiles reconcile their technical virtues with architecture's symbolic weight? The answer may lie in a synthesis of performance and poetics—a space where fabrics are uniquely positioned.
