Sustainability and Connection: Redefining Urban Living Through Design

Such projects tackle urban challenges. Cities are projected to house 68% of the global population by 2050, increasing the need for sustainable infrastructure and social connection. Innovative architectural design may address these crises.
Stefano Boeri Architetti's Bosco Verticale towers in Milan, completed in 2014, set a precedent for vertical forest architecture. These towers incorporate over 20,000 plants, absorbing carbon dioxide while offering residents a breathable living experience. In a 2021 interview, Boeri stated, "a prototype for future urban forestation" aims to "offer a vision of the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature." Critics question whether such high-maintenance projects can scale to broader urban contexts.
Scalability is being tested in Singapore. The Kampung Admiralty development by WOHA Architects, completed in 2018, integrates multiple urban functions within a single complex. It combines senior housing, medical facilities, retail options, and a rooftop community park. The project, awarded the 2018 World Building of the Year, serves as a template for "vertical kampungs"—dense, multi-use urban solutions for land-scarce cities.
Community-centric urban design extends beyond Asia. In Berlin, the Holzmarkt cooperative emerged from a failed privatization bid in the early 2000s. Instead of luxury housing, Holzmarkt encompasses co-working spaces, cultural venues, and urban gardening initiatives. Sociologist Andrej Holm noted in a 2022 lecture, "The Holzmarkt project showcases a way to return the city to its inhabitants." This ethos contrasts sharply with profit-driven urban development.
Yet, such projects raise questions about accessibility. For whom are these urban spaces designed? While the design community celebrates green architecture, financial barriers often limit their impact. High-end eco-friendly apartments like Bosco Verticale risk reinforcing socio-economic divides.
In response, some architects advocate for a localized approach. The "15-minute city" concept, popularized by Carlos Moreno and implemented in Paris, seeks to decentralize urban areas. By ensuring residents can access work, education, healthcare, and leisure within a 15-minute radius, the model aims to reduce reliance on cars. Critics highlight challenges in retrofitting sprawling cities like Los Angeles.
Sustainability in urban architecture also involves a materials revolution. Timber, once dismissed for large-scale projects, is resurging due to engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT). Mjøstårnet in Norway, completed in 2019, stands as the world's tallest timber structure at 85.4 meters. It demonstrates how sustainable materials can challenge the steel-and-concrete norm. However, architectural historian Adrian Forty cautioned, "the fetishisation of timber risks overlooking the broader carbon footprint of global supply chains." Local sourcing and lifecycle analysis are critical in assessing true sustainability.
Institutions are stepping into this dialogue. The London Design Museum's 2023 exhibition The Future of Urban Living showcased prototypes aimed at reimagining cities in the face of climate change. One standout was the Urban Sequoia concept by SOM, proposing buildings that capture more carbon than they emit. SOM’s architects argued for shifting the metric of success from "net zero" to "net positive." Whether these frameworks can transition to practical projects remains an open question.
The effectiveness of these initiatives is still under scrutiny. What is clear is the growing recognition that aesthetics alone cannot define success in city-making. The convergence of environmental and social imperatives demands innovative forms and processes—collaborative and critically engaged with their contexts.
As cities evolve under climate change, projects like Amager Bakke, Bosco Verticale, Kampung Admiralty, and Holzmarkt offer glimpses into the future. Their varied approaches remind us that no single solution suffices. Urban architecture must adapt as an ecosystem. The challenge lies in ensuring these solutions remain accessible and genuinely sustainable, rather than aspirational showcases for the few.
